Great Wall
Posted: August 14, 2012 Filed under: Uncategorized 6 Comments »This isn’t the Great Wall of China but it is a great wall of stone to paint in the Chinese section of the Botanical Gardens. I’m not quite sure what paper I painted this on because I have some small remnants of watercolour paper with no visible watermarks, but this was like painting on a paper towel. The paper just soaked up all the pigment and it was near impossible to get a hard edge. Just as I was finishing this some workers came along and placed some inflatable balloons that were supposed to look like the Great Wall, except in plastic. Glad I got my sketch in before that.

i love this painting Shari, with the strong pattern of shapes and its’ architectural composition.
Amazing work!
Thanks Mary. It’s hard to find verticals like this unless you are painting architecture. I used to love to paint quarries.
I know this spot Shari. Love your impression of it.
Thanks Alison. When we were talking earlier about areas in our paintings we were happy about and others we felt didn’t work as well I was thinking about the overworked trees here.
Every day, before I look at your painting, I read your words and try to imagine what the painting will be like… today, after reading your description, I was expecting a mess. I got a shock… this is stunning! I love the rendering of the light on the rocks, the bridge and the trees. I wish that I could paint like that on a paper towel!
Thanks Ross!
