In the morning I sketched from Covey Hill looking down into the valley and in the afternoon I looked back up at Covey Hill. As the leaves turn to red and the great swaths of cornfield turn to yellow I will certainly go back there.
I was experimenting with some Winsor Newton 240 lb stock that I had in the house so I also redid this sketch on paper.

This is a delightful piece and makes a great set paired with yesterday’s painting. Those colours in the landscape really are changing… I am so looking forward to autumn to see where that takes your paintings. And the broken foreground edge works really well!
Thanks Ross. I wish these weren’t in a book. I might hang them together on a wall. I say this all the time but I have to start working more on paper. Or entirely on paper.
Ross, I just updated the post with a small painting of done from my sketch which also has a broken foreground edge. The paper is quite a bit thicker than I am used to — almost like a board.
Did you do this painting in the six minutes between your two comments above? That would be fast… even for you!
Yes!
Of course you did! But do you realize that, in your haste to show off how quickly you can paint, you completely missed the opportunity to use this painting for the next day’s post… and missed the opportunity to add to your stockpile?
I realize that but I wanted to have these together.
I REALLY hope that even though your year of a drawing a day is coming to a close, you will consider continuing on and on and on …….
i so look forward to each day’s posting.
Hi Cathy. It’s great to hear from you. I REALLY hope to continue as well. Up until now I have said that I just wanted to reach one year but now that it is almost here I don’t see myself stopping.
I love all the golds!
Thanks!
i’m fascinated with your painting from observation compared with the second one
from copying and memory, as an art exercise. A great idea for students to try too.
Think i prefer the one from observation which seems to have lots more life and energy.
However the copy is a traditional and pretty rendition. Curious to know which one you like better?
I much prefer the sketch Mary. It has lots more energy. And that’s why I prefer to paint on location. This was an interesting experiment for me too but I find when I am painting in studio it’s like I’m just filling in the spaces.
I absolutely love your skies!
Thanks Vicky!
