Quiet
Posted: February 26, 2013 Filed under: Uncategorized 18 CommentsOn my bedside table these days is a book by the great British watercolour painter Trevor Chamberlain. He is a member of The Wapping Group of Artists, a group who meet every Wednesday to record life in various locations on the river Thames. Check out their work if you want to see some extraordinary marine painting. Every night I read a few pages and I guess it gets me dreaming about painting boats in the mist. I woke up to fog this morning and that meant I had to find a boatyard to paint on my way to work. This was sketched at the Beaconsfield Yacht Club.

Excellent, Shari. Great mood and atmosphere… and the overlapping boat shapes work really well. Worthy of a larger painting… but if you do, I would suggest nudging that tree in the centre.

Thanks Ross. Yes, I think it could make a larger painting too and I agree about the tree in the middle. I should have changed i tthis morning but I didn’t have much time.

Ignore that last dumb comment… what I would really like to know is what you would change with the composition if you were turning this into a larger painting? More sky… more foreground?

I would definitely move the tree and probably add more sky. I think having more height in the trees would be a good contrast to the very horizontal composition.

Yes, that special light. I thought I would be able to see the church in the distance but that had all disappeared.

We live around the corner from here and we have enjoyed many an off season walk there– this captures the bulkiness of boats on land, the greys of winter that evokes the very absence of a summer’s day— everything so perfectly “off” that it brings so many more levels to the work than just what we “see” — love it
