Revisiting the tree

I sketched this very same tree about this time last year. Like my wheelbarrow, the pots in my yard, the steeple in Pointe Claire, I guess this is one of the subjects I will return to often. Painted in a Moleskine sketchbook with a big flat brush and lots of Azo Yellow!

I remember this tree! I studied it last year and again this year…the same way I study your skies, water reflections and more. Sometime, I hope to study directly from you, but in the meantime, I will keep referring to your gorgeous paintings. Thank you!

Which came first- the yellow or the branches? Love this.

    • I painted it like this: a big wash of yellow for the tree, then a darker yellow for the parts where you can see through the branches, then the branches and trunk, then the background and the shadows.

One of the things I love about this painting is the explosive feeling, like a fireworks going off. Because that is just what some of these trees look like. The tree colours, in just a certain light, dazzles the eyes and leaves one spellbound. Beautifully captured Shari.

I like it… you make foliage look too easy!
There are some similarities with the wheelbarrow… I don’t think the tree moves either. : )
But if you are going to compete with the wheelbarrow, you will really need to do a winter painting… that would be really interesting… does that mean that you will need to sit in the snow?

    • You know the wheelbarrow moves all the time but I carefully place it back in the same spot before I draw.
I would love to paint this tree in the winter but I was sitting in my car to do this and I will do the same in the winter. You have probably not sat in any snow but it is not that comfortable! : )
