Westmount winter
Posted: December 17, 2013 Filed under: Uncategorized 11 CommentsIt’s impossible to use my car studio on a day like today. It’s just too bitterly cold, even for a winter painter like me. The weatherman described the morning haze in the air as “ice fog”, a term I had never heard before. The best solution for these types of days is to draw indoors, or find a window seat at a café and stay there until the room fills and the windows steam up, at which point you hope your sketch is done.
beautiful, love your style!

Very “dour”, I think that’s a word, reminds me of Edinburgh, beautiful architecture but it struck me as very grey. Yours is a beautiful dour.

It is a word – stern, harsh, forbidding, melancholy, gloomy – a little heavy for your beautiful watercolour,
how about reminiscent of lovely Edinburgh

I wasn’t offended Don! Now if you called me dour that would be a different story! But I painted greystones on a grey day so your description was fitting. Hope all is well in Vancouver.

I really like the colors in your sky,Shari. Though grey, you have warmed it up.
I agree that cafe sketching is a good choice in winter if you can find one with interesting views outside. We have no shortage of coffee cafes here in Portland!

I used a wash of raw sienna on the sky and then added in my grey to give it that warm underglow.
Yes, you certainly have the best cafes in Portland! And you’ve done some great sketches of them too.
