As one

Something I think about when I am painting a bouquet like this is to group flowers of the same colour into one preliminary wash. For instance, there are three or four purple flowers at the bottom of the sketch. My first purple wash is one shape that includes all the flowers. Later on I put in some darks that separate the petals or the larger flower shapes but I start them as one.

I have seen books on “How to paint flowers in watercolour” or instructional videos on the same thing. The results look nice, but lifeless. But Shari, your watercolour paintings of flowers always have an exuberance and an energy that leaps off the page. It’s as if you are able to see the invisible energy field or 6th dimension of Mother Nature’s progeny and transferred it to the page in paint. It’s hard to explain (yes, I’m sober right now). In any case, this sketch is spectacular!

    Lovely and vibrant!

  7. My favorite part of this sketch is the pencil line jumping around under the washes. It makes the piece come alive.
