“Draw me a Mountain” opens today

Today is the opening day of “Draw me a Mountain“, an exhibition featuring drawings and paintings of Mount Royal. It’s a joint event between Urban Sketchers Montreal and Les amis de la Montagne and it’s been great fun to be part of the planning process for this. The exhibit features about fifty works and is on for the month of May (weekends only) at Maison Smith. Hope you get out there to see it!

I had a bit of time to kill the other day between appointments and was parked facing this tree. I had a small sketchbook with me and a Micron 05 pen. The trees are just starting to bud in Montreal so it’s a perfect time to draw them — just before they leaf out and all the branches disappear.

        On the subject of trees…
I think that drawing trees (particularly the trunks) has a lot in common with drawing the human form. So much variety of form and proportion… so much complexity. Like a human body… just more limbs and no symmetry.
        What do you think?

      • I think you’re right. Drawing this tree was just like drawing Marie today…
The think about drawing trees is that you’ll never know if I put a branch or a knot in the wrong place, right? But if Marie’s eye was in the middle of her chin or if her hand was coming out of her ear, that might be a bit of a problem. But I guess you know that already…

You are right… there are certain rules about drawing the human form that don’t apply to trees… unless you are very famous… in which case, the rules don’t seem to apply any more.
