East Gate, Chinatown

I spent some time sketching with Marc Holmes and visiting sketchers James and Jeanette Gurney today. (If you don’t know James’s blog, you should check out Gurney Journey. I promise you won’t regret it.) We chose this spot in Chinatown because of the interesting end-of-day shadows moving up the buildings on this narrow part of La Gauchetière. It’s a really busy pedestrian thoroughfare, and as you can see from the photo, four people sketching on the street always creates some interest from passersby, especially since each sketch was so different. You may not see Jeanette’s beautiful work because I don’t think she posts her sketches online, and I think Marc was facing a different view, but hopefully Jim will post his version of this same scene on his blog tomorrow and then you’ll see what I mean.

    I like that feeling of looking into the sunlit part of the street, past the shaded wall on each side… nicely framed.
    But, Chinatown seems to lean to the left… are you having trouble with your easel? : )

      I was sitting on a folding stool so perhaps it was the ground that was sloped. Or my head. Also it was a very windy day so maybe the buildings were leaning a little.

        I have noticed in the past that your drawings are sometimes “a little crooked”,,, but, being such a sensitive commenter, I don’t like to point out all of the difficulties that you are having.

    Love this, Shari: the vibrant mix of colour, the way the windows are indicated in the distant building, the treatment of the foliage. As I follow Gurney’s blog, I am tickled that he is in Montreal and wonder what other scenes he may have captured.

      I’m glad to hear that you too are a fan of James Gurney’s blog and his work. You can well imagine what a treat it was for me to look through his sketchbook. Every page is a little treasure. I know he did do more drawing in Montreal so hopefully he will post it. I think he and his wife were out sketching today and we gave him some ideas of where to go but I don’t know where they ended up.

    Glad to hear the Gurney’s are in town. He is a great inspiration to me. His sketching DVD is excellent as is his “Color and Light” book.
