Sugar shack blues

My intention this week was to paint a snow scene for my holiday blog post, but alas, the ground is bare, the sky is grey and heavy rain is falling. It’s not even a day for painting from my car. The sugar shack, painted from my studio, will have to suffice.

Despite the weather, my message is the same. I wish you a wonderful holiday season and a happy new year. Thanks to everyone who brought me so much joy this year — by emailing and commenting on the blog, by sending me suggestions and links to look at, and by coming out to sketch at workshops and with our Sunday group in Montreal. I hope that 2016 is filled with many sketching hours for everyone.

Hi Shari, It would be really interesting and helpful, to see your painting set up when you paint plein air in your car.Would you consider posting one? Love sugar shack blues…the values seem perfect to me. Such a peaceful wintry scene in blues. What colors were in your palette? Thank you,Nancy Date: Mon, 21 Dec 2015 23:29:52 +0000 To: njohnson524@msn.com

    • Hi Nancy, I am often asked to do a post on my car setup. I will try to do it this winter.
In this scene, I did an overall light wash of cerulean blue, reserving the whites, and then let that dry. The rest of the scene was painted with more cerulean, ultramarine, phthalo and a bit of permanent alizarin crimson.
      Happy holidays!

Beautiful sketch, Shari! Love the play of shadows.

Wishing you and your family a safe, healthy and festive holiday season, and all the very best in the New Year.

I really enjoyed your online classes and the Montebello workshop immensely, Shari, and thank you for your encouraging feedback throughout. I have gone through your second online class and it is superb! Alas with all the holiday baking, cooking, and prep I haven’t managed to do the homework, but I look forward to posting early in the New Year. During the past couple of months, I’ve been working on oil and pastel portraits of my dog, Maiken, which I hope to finish over the holidays. I’ve attached the oil one below.

May the New Year bring health, happiness and everything that gives you joy. Best always, Sandra
