This is fun…and it made me wonder why you chose to do the shadows on the snowmen with horizontal lines. It works really well, but is something I don’t think I’ve ever done. Thanks for making me think.

Hi Jean. I don’t usually draw snow scenes in ink, I usually paint them, but it’s been so cold out these past few days I could only be out in the car for a short time. I wanted to show the shadows areas on the snow men without putting in a lot of tone. I don’t usually do crosshatching so I had to find a way to show a darker area on a really light subject. That was m solution. It’s a bit like a cross-contour drawing, but not exactly. Anyway, I guess you got the idea that it was shadow on snow so it must have worked in some way.

It totally worked. I just have never done a horizontal shading– always angled or cross-hatched or contoured, so I was surprised to see it and a little surprised by how effectively it worked on a round subject.

Hello Shari, I’m new to your blog and live in very hot Western Australia where it’s 39degrees Celsius (about 108F) so I’m just loving your snow. I have spent 4 days in Montreal which I loved especially all the water and green. Yes I did smile
