Alice in the corner
Posted: January 13, 2016 Filed under: Uncategorized 34 CommentsI spent the day looking through drawing books in preparation for a workshop I’m giving at school tomorrow along with some fellow teachers. I won’t go into too many details, but it’s basically about drawing in the digital world, and how we motivate students to use pencil and paper. Because I most often work in small sketchbooks, I sometimes forget how wonderful it is to do a large pencil drawing. Leafing through the drawing books and seeing works in pencil or charcoal by some of my favourite artists pushed me to take out a large sketchpad (14″ x 17″) and do a pencil drawing on a paper that has the proper tooth for graphite. It was a pleasure to spend a bit of time with Alice after our walk. And it made me realize how much I miss life drawing.

Thanks Jane. It was a really fun workshop. Most people had little experience in drawing but they did an amazing job. We did blind contour, then contour then value and shading. The results were surprisingly great.

Have you ever seen David Hockney’s paintings of his Dachshunds? Look them up. They are great and it may inspire you.

No, I had never seen the Dachshund paintings so I just went looking. I found images from his Dog Days book. Fun! The sketches are great!

Oh my gosh, this is so gorgeous, Shari! I almost caught my breath when I first saw it. Really sweet and perfect rendering. I’ve been really working on animals lately, so this especially caught my eye. What kind of paper did you use, if you don’t mind me asking?

Alice is lovely – your drawings are lovely. As much as I enjoy and admire all your watercolors, I often wish you’d do more pen & ink work. A Mae West saying I think ? – Too much of a good thing is , , , Wonderful !
Different topic – I have just learned of Karen Lamonte and her incredible glass sculptures of dresses – the body only shown by its’ absence. All the life of Grecian sculpture and Baroque painting expressed in the fabric. So gorgeous. Quite easy to find on her website or google images. Everyone will delight in her work.
