Winter eyes
Posted: March 4, 2016 Filed under: Uncategorized 27 CommentsThere’s been so much grey in my sketches lately that when I saw this yellow house, in the sun, with a parking spot in front of it, I had to stop. In a week’s time I’ll be off to South Carolina to give a workshop. I know from experience that when I go from a cold, grey place (Montreal in the winter) to a warm, sunny one like Palmetto Bluff, it takes some time to get used to the colour in my surroundings. I experienced that in Costa Rica last winter. It’s as if the intense colours are just too much for my winter weary eyes to adjust to. For a while I paint everything a little too pale, and then slowly the colours in my sketchbook become properly saturated. So consider this the first practice for a temperate climate.

That’s what makes watercolour so interesting for me Janice. It takes so many years and so much practice to get it right. At the same time, you can’t let your drawing skills fall by the wayside, so I am always doing something in my sketchbook.

Love the colors, but. . . more than that: I see a “shorthand” that you’re probably not even aware of, just slap-dabbing along. The siding of the yellow house as it meets the window: chk, chk, chk. . . and then meets the edge of the building: chk, chk, chk, chk, chk. . . This is valuable stuff you’re sharing. THANKS!

I love the color and your watercolor too..it was gorgeous out today..Shari..yesterday I was at the Museum of Fine Arts..Pompeii..
I saw a sketcher and approached her..she was soo good and so nice and friendly..she does do Urban Sketchers but had missed last week she said..just lovely.

Hi Monique. Yes, I think many of the sketchers in our group draw at the museum quite often but I hesitate to book outings there because they charge admission now and we try to schedule free locations. Did you like the Pompeii show? I have to get there to see it.

One of my students is joining you and you should know she just won Honorable Mention in her first ever competition entry in a local guild show. She’s terribly excited to be painting with you. That beautifull house corner of 10 th and St-Joseph is a very nice subject. Evenif it aaa avery cold morning you mangera to make it very bright and warm.
