First colour

Cleaning up the remnants of last year’s gardens, making space for the green shoots poking up out of the ground, talking to neighbours over fences. I should probably be doing that too, but instead I sketched the first tiny bit of colour in my garden — my crocuses. It always seems like a miracle to me when something this delicate pops out of soil that was covered in snow less than a week ago. Sketched in a Pentalic sketchbook, 8″ x 5″.

Ah, bluebells. We never have those here but last year I saw the bluebell woods at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. Breathtaking! Lucky you.

Thanks Charlie. I can’t wait to do a little gardening. Annuals can only be planted here after the third week in May, so we have a ways to go still. Perennials will be out in the nurseries soon!

Oh, my….I DO miss crocuses. We have a few bulbs down here int he deep south, but none so heart-warming as those tiny crocuses. Your painting does them justice, Shari.

Lovely painting. It’s so amusing comparing the seasons in each place too. In Athens we get crocuses in January or at the latest February. They’re long gone… X Marina

Probably one of my favorites…one of your simpler sketches but it teaches so much about background, composition, color (or is that colour!), and knowing when to stop! Thanks for sharing with your many fans.
