A couple of Manchester pubs
Posted: September 19, 2016 Filed under: Uncategorized 18 CommentsI’m finally getting around to scanning some of my Manchester sketches from this past July. Better late than never, I guess. I know I’ve posted this one of Peveril of the the Peak Pub already, but that was from an iPhone photo on location. The colour is never that accurate on those posts, so here’s a proper scan. I sketched this early one morning, before the start of the Urban Sketchers Symposium, and so glad I did because later in the week this was probably the most sketched building in Manchester and I might have had to jostle other sketchers to get a good vantage point. Have a look at this post to see some other takes on this iconic meeting spot.
Every evening after the long days of sketching workshops and activities, sketchers gathered at Peveril of the Peak to have a pint and… sketch some more. While waiting for a friend, I sketched one of the hanging baskets on the corner of the building, along with a bit of the shiny green and yellow tiled facade.
During another break before a workshop, I had time to draw The Salutation, a pub across from the Manchester School of Art. I never managed to find the time to add colour to the drawing so I added it on the airplane, with no photo reference. (Can you tell I was on a budget airline with no in-flight entertainment?) It has an oddly artificial look to it, I think because I used some artistic license with the colours. There was certainly not that much blue in the windows but hey, at 30,000 feet, I guess that’s permissible.
Great pictures!

Wowwwwww Shari,
In quebec frech ( living in the Eastern Townships of Montreal), ” Je capote” .
Your colors are very lively and transparent.
I’m keeping this in my ” Shari” file.
Your windows shine with light and caracter.
The colors wow, the shadows too.
A real gem.
Thanks for sharing.

I kind of like those blue windows done on the plane! The other two sketches are so lively and colorful. That odd angled green pub is wonderful. I can see why so many other sketchers had to take it on.

You like those? Really? It looked ok on the plane but when I got it home and had a look I found it really artificial. But the pub was so much fun to draw. Especially since I had a rare sunny morning to draw it.

It’s funny, the inside of Peveril of the Peak was quite ordinary but what an exterior! Good thing we had some tables outside to draw on.

You really show the way to paint the urban landscape. Beautiful work, as always. Your students are so fortunate to have you. I hope they know that.

Thanks Lee. It works both ways. I am lucky to be teaching and learning from them too.

I love your work painting buildings –the pub is great. I agree that the blue adds a lot and isn’t “too” blue at all.
