After the fall
Posted: December 30, 2016 Filed under: Uncategorized 14 CommentsThere was quite a good snowfall in Montreal yesterday, and for once it’s not followed by rain or freezing rain. That’s makes it pretty perfect to paint. After a good storm like this, there’s snow on the vertical surfaces like trees and poles but it doesn’t last long so I went out early. Fortunately the plows had already passed in Pointe Claire. There’s nothing worse like being pushed out of a parking spot by a snowplow driver honking in back of you when you’re in the middle of a sketch.
For a quiet scene like this I stick with lighter colours — mostly Cerulean Blue, Organic Vermilion and Hansa Yellow. I am able to get all the soft tones I like with this triad, but for the wires and evergreens I have to boost it up a little with some darker pigments. Sketched on Arches CP paper, 9″ x 12″ in a cold car with foggy windows.
Perfect colouring!!

I just love your winter scenes. Particularly in this painting I enjoy seeing the dry brush on the sidewalk, the snow on the pole and corner sign, the splash of cerulean blue on the street and….imagining you painting through frosted windows yet capturing great details of it all.
Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for writing Bernadette. I really had fun painting the details on this one, especially the street and the snow on the signs and poles. It was a technical challenge to have one half of the brush dry and one half wet.

“Remember that the mighty oak was once a nut like you.” I cherished my Mémère’s beautiful embroidery of the quote and of the towering tree and the little nut, along with the scenery. Over the years I have remembered it fondly with encouragement to start somewhere. Shari, you are the mighty oak and I am the nut. Thank you so much for sharing and teaching!! Your work is so real and beautiful! Have you ever been ticketed while at work in your car studio? And must you abide by the law if the sign you are painting is covered with snow? 🤗

Hi Suzanne, Thanks so much for your very thoughtful words. It’s very funny that you should ask about being ticketed. I actually have not been, but I’ve often come close. Sometimes I am stopped by security guards who pull up beside my car but once I show them my sketch they always smile and drive off. And in Montreal we always have to abide by the signs, even if there’s snow on them. Thanks for noticing that detail in my painting.
