I need to sketch 100 animals
Posted: March 31, 2017 Filed under: Uncategorized 13 CommentsLast week our Urban Sketchers Montreal group met at the Redpath Museum, and I thought I’d try out my people sketching technique (Payne’s Grey watercolour and brush in a small sketchbook) on some taxidermy animals. This was a lot harder than I thought it would be even though these guys move a LOT less than the people in Tim Hortons. There are some parts of these creature that you just have to get right, otherwise it can look really wrong. Like where the eyes are on the wolf, or the shape of the head on the polar bear.
Or the length and angle of the neck of the caribou…
It left me thinking that drawing people was actually easier than I thought. Or else that maybe I needed to sketch 100 stuffed animals some time.
Anyway, this week I went back to sketching people again, at school and in cafés. It was kind of a relief to get back to noses and skin instead of snouts and fur.

Sketching animals (even still ones) is something that needs practice too. I laughed at the idea of sketching 100 of them. You’ve really caught the sketching people bug. Nice sketches!

I draw a lot of sheep (hard to keep awake). Even apparently docile animals move all the time. You need to have eight or nine drawings on the go !

Have no idea where I’d find 100 different animals to sketch. Would have to draw my 2 dogs and parakeets over and over. Plus a neighbor’s cat. But it is fun to go to a zoo and draw which I did in a college class.
Are the above ink or paint? Love the wolf especially.

These stuffed animals really come alive under your brush. In fact they look just as alert as the people you have drawn. Each one is a character. People or animals you paint them so well.

This sketching looks great with only a brush! I’m impressed and may try this simple way of impromptu sketching while living life by keeping a brush, paint pot and small pad in my purse.
