Adirondack panoramas
Posted: April 10, 2017 Filed under: Uncategorized 28 CommentsTo pass the time on long car rides (when I am not the driver) I love to sketch panoramas. On the way down to New York City on Friday it was definitely the end of winter — lots of rain and even some sleet in the upper Adirondacks — but on the way home today it was clearly spring. The colours at this time of year are so subtle that you need to look hard to find them. But they’re there. Ochres and siennas in the dried grasses, deep purples in the mountains and the slightest touches of green as the trees start to feel the warmth of the sun. I usually sketch these in a book I keep mostly for this. Here are a few more I sketched on the drive from Nevada to Utah as we crossed a little corner of Arizona.
The simplicity of your work is beautiful. Your sketches are so clean and fresh. They are a joy to behold. Thank you for sharing.

You make it look so deceptively easy and i know it isn’t! These are beautiful. And having driven that route many times when my son and daughter-in-law both danced for Le Grand I can say you’ve truly caught the feel and view one has going down and up past High Point-lovely.

Watching your son and daughter-in-law dance in Le Grand sounds pretty exciting to me. What a thrill.

It was indeed and now their daughters have begun ballet. Who knows where that will end.

Amazing ! When I zoom the panoramas on my large computer screen, I really have the feeling I’m driving in the landscape. It’s a zen feeling ! Bravo !

I never really thought of doing this Doug, until I saw Virginia Hein’s work on the Urban Sketchers blog. She does some beautiful road panoramas on her drive to Joshua Tree National Park every year. She was my inspiration.

Nicely done. I’ve wc Shetched the “18 mile” stretch from the Keys to Miami a couple of times. It’s not as easy as you make it.

That’s a very flat view Carolyn. I think mine was easier because I had the mountains. Your must just have been stripes of blue and turquoise.

Great that you can paint while traveling in the car. These are great! I’m almost always the driver so I miss out on being able to do this.

I guess I’m lucky with this. I am usually the passenger.

You are encouraging me to try this. I am enjoying your landscapes as we lived in the Southwest for over 20 years.

Thanks so much. For these I use a Handbook Watercolour Journal, pocket panorama size (3.5 x 8.25″). It’s perfect for these car rides or for any panorama, really.
