Blue carpet

If you visited the LAA Spring Show at Fritz Farm on Saturday or Sunday, you may have noticed this blue carpet of scilla near the parking lot. Most everyone stopped to have a look and snap photos. I didn’t  have time to sketch on the weekend but went back this morning to do a quick painting. It was quite cold (2°C) but I sketched standing up, and used a mixture of Cobalt Violet and Cobalt Blue for the flowers. These little blossoms don’t last long so if you want to see this show, get there soon.

Lovely! I was anticipating seeing the scilla when I arrived. You too can have a carpet of scilla. They spread easily.

Wow, I really love this sketch.

I’m not familiar with scilla, so I looked it up and found the answer to a mystery. I inherited a house, and last spring the first flower to bloom, even before the snowdrops, was a small blue flower. Just one. I was happy that it appeared again this year. It didn’t last long, and my photo didn’t turn out. Thanks to you, I now know what it is, and will be getting some more to go with it.

    • Elizabeth, these spread like crazy if you have the right soil. My neighbour has a carpet of them as well. I am not so lucky because mine don’t seem to spread so maybe my soil is not good. But at least your mystery is solved.

I’ve been reading about them, now that I know what they are. From what I’ve learned, your problem is more likely to be about moisture than the soil. One source of info is http://www.thespruce.com. I am happy to find out what they are – individually they are as appealing as they are in mass, as in your delightful watercolor.
