Black boots

That’s funny. I do that all the time. Years ago I even did a series of large-scale paintings after my son was born: the laundry basket, the shoes, a pile of towels, etc. There’s no end to the stuff we can sketch in our own houses, right?

Nice sketch but all that moaning about snow and yet you get by with just ankle boots! Either you’re really tough or you’ve been having us on.

I do moan a lot, don’t I? No, you’re right, I don’t wear these when there’s a lot of snow. But… we have had a long and cold spring so these are the transition boots. For when it’s still cold but there’s no snow on the ground.

That old song: “These boots are made for walkin'” came to mind when I saw your lovely sketch. Also interesting how the watercolor “oozles” (as a watercolor teachers once called them) mimick the stains that dried salted-snow naturally make on boots and floors.

Gayle, that is funny. I hadn’t thought about the watercolour blooms but you are right, they are so much like the messy salt stains on my pants after walking downtown on a slushy day.

Reminds me of Van Gogh. And North Dakota. I also have several different boots-varying lengths and warmth. Just as you said-depends on the snow. Don’t use them much since we moved to PA.

You have to draw some shoes and boots. The detail in them is a lot of fun to draw, and challenging too. I always seem to get one bigger than the other.

North Dakota is about an hour from the Canadian border. We lived there for 13 cold years. I had all sorts of heavy winter clothing and several boots. One of those places that is safe and clean with honest people–and very boring, especially for an artist. That is probably more than you wanted to know. Ha.

I really like this watercolour sketch. I have long been fond of “snippets” of our lives. For me it’s a bit like showing appreciation, and/or preserving a time in your life. Your colour choices are minimal for this yet the detail is rich. I imagine you quickly pushing each boot off and happy to be home sweet home.

You imagined it well Suzanne. At this time of year it’s still cool in the morning, especially when I have to leave the house early. By the time I get home at the end of the day, the air is warm. That’s why I decided yesterday that it was the end of boot weather. As for the detail, sometimes it is very satisfying to get lost in the detail of something, in this case the texture of the leather on the boots. Layers and layers of it.
