Thirty minute sketch
Posted: November 6, 2018 Filed under: Uncategorized 21 CommentsIt’s been frustratingly difficult to sketch outdoors these days. We’ve had a lot of rain over the past few weeks, and the rainiest days seem to coincide with my free time before or after class. Last week I had a long break but it was pouring outside and I just wasn’t in the mood to sketch in a café. And then there was the day when the weather was good and I had a short break, but I forgot my palette of paints. Ugh. I ended up drawing in ink but it just wasn’t the same because the trees were bright yellow and I painted them grey. Today I had about thirty minutes on my way to school. I sketched directly in pen, and I don’t think the perspective is quite right because I was rushing so much, but I was happy to sketch that bright yellow tree before all the leaves fall.

I agree, the last of the yellows are not to be missed. It was 30 min well spent.

These last ones seem to be the most vivid, perhaps in contrast to the bare trees.

Wish we had all that rain. It rained last month for like a day.
The only rain we’ve had since May or maybe June. I know.
I live in Northern California and I should quit whining.
But as we get into mid November I just miss the SOUND of rain
let alone its’ obvious benefits.
Anyway always love your watercolors rain or shine.

I like this one best of all, so far. I can learn from the buildings and the car especially. 30 minutes! Not enough time for me to figure out what I want to include in the scene!!!! Nice job!!!

Amazing how effective the yellow “blob” of the tree is . I mean there is so little detail but interpreted instantly as yellow leaves. I am always trying to balance colors. Yet you have red on one side only and it is completely balanced by the yellow. With the small amount of blue-voila, the primaries. Love it.
Had to laugh reading you didn’t have your paints with you. I always read about artists that have everything always with them in their handbags. I am not that organized.

What a beauty! Hard to notice inaccuratcy in the buildings because they are handled so well. I always skip the cars, not knowing how to “fit” them in. You are an excellent teacher, helping us to see as you see.

It is so cheerful, with the gold hues on the trees it looks like sunshine everywhere! Are you still using quinacridone gold (the new 2 pigment version) for these beautiful golden trees as you did in your online classes?

This is a case study for me of complexity and high contrast at the center of interest vs the simplicity, restfulness, and an overall rhythm of the surroundings. So quick and spontaneous, really nice!
