Sanibel reunion

This afternoon I was trying some outdoor drawing with my iPad, in my usual Sanibel spot, looking out at the canal and trying to figure out how to do a digital drawing of the palm trees, when this guy landed in front of me. I’m pretty sure he was the same guy as last year. He’s quite bold, staring at me until I start drawing him, and then preening and turning his head this way and that. The iPad is perfect for quick sketches like this because I can draw him in one position and if he moves I can start another drawing and complete the first one when he moves back to his original position.

Coincidentally, earlier in the day and using more traditional tools, I drew the same subject as last year when I first met the blue heron.

I’ve been using “Tayasui Sketches” for a while now, I do alright using traditional methods. However, using the iPad is a bit harder because I hate not being able to hand my hand as a base for my fingers. Ha, I hope that makes sense.

  5. That’s so funny! I love the texture on the posts and feathers, great use of whatever tool/stroke pattern that was. I’m enjoying your blue skies and marinas — a pleasant break from what I can see here.

    • Thanks Alison. Glad you are enjoying the blue skies. We are enjoying the shortbread! It’s a real treat and we are trying to make them last by having only small pieces at a time. Hope you’re having a nice Christmas.

You made such an interesting composition of blue herons. Wouldn’t it be nice to know if it is was the same bird as last year? How lucky to have a heron pose for you.

Love those blue herons! Also the almost ‘mottled’ effect you’ve achieved on the body of the herons as well as the wooden posts.

Great sketches. But careful having that heron pose for you …. he’ll likely send you a bill.

You’re lucky the herons came..in Novemeber we found way less wildlife on the beach..the seagull,,herons egrets and pelicas seemed almost extinct compared to most years. That red tide..is a real issue.

  11. Good job on your drawings! Did you use an Apple Pencil or something if it’s on your iPad?

I wouldn’t be surprised if it was the same blue heron. A lot of birds seem to return to the same spot year after year just like we do. lol The digital sketch of the birds is great and you have quickly managed to have your digis not look like digis. The palette in that area is just so pleasant and makes me feel good. I will enjoy being along on your trip. Enjoy!
