Here today gone tomorrow
Posted: July 5, 2020 Filed under: Uncategorized 53 CommentsThe daylilies that opened in the garden this week are so vibrant, so shockingly ORANGE, that I had to paint them with pure orange paint. There’s nothing I can mix from red and yellow that could come close to the pure fiery saturation of Schmincke Transparent Orange. And for today’s sketch I decided not to draw with pen or pencil first. I wanted the brush to lead me as I made the flower shapes, and then have the pigment and water combine within those shapes. Sketched on Fabriano CP paper.

Really lovely organge! I have the same ones as well as yellow ones in my front garden…You inspire me to get out and paint them, Shari. Thanks for that 🙂

Your day lilies are absolutely gorgeous! Love that juicy pop of colour. Such energy! Thanks for the recommendation, although you’ve blown my resolve to refrain from buying another tube of paint.

They dance before our eyes. Beautiful rhythm running throughout. The colors are stunning against the white background. Another floral gem.

I have to repeat the word gorgeous. Orange is my favorite flower color. I prefer it even in roses. I have been trying to paint flowers for so long and never seem to succeed so I appreciate your skill at this.

Shari, these are gorgeous! I am getting ready for my first attempt at painting my beloved daylilies, so precious with their blooms that only last one day!!

I wanted to buy your two classes on Bluprint, and did not figure it out before they unexpectedly shut down. Is there a chance that someday, somehow, those two classes will be available again? They were so good and included so much. (I reviewed them during a free time period). I really want them!!

Love your calligraphic approach in doing watercolor. I mean it as an experienced sign writer that you have the magic touch is the use of the brush ! The other compliment I have is your sense of color where oranges and greens can easily become garish in application..

Thanks so much James. I know what you mean about combining orange and green. I feel that way when I paint in the autumn. I think this sketch works because there’s so much white background. I always have trouble painting sugar maples in autumn when there’s too much orange and nothing to balance it.

Schmincke’s trans orange is a staple on my palette…such a great color! Our “summer” has been so cool to now, the daylillies in my yard are only beginning to think about blooming 😉

Nice Daylillies, or Ditch Lillies as my Grandfather calls them. They look amazing for a few short weeks, but then look more like a weed. I had a lot of them in our rock garden when we moved here, but we pulled them out. Now they are growing back again slowly and I Might leave a few as there was very bad selection at the garden centre this year.
