Red velvet pillow
Posted: February 20, 2021 Filed under: Uncategorized 33 CommentsMy bag was packed to go out and do some winter sketching from my car, but the snow started to fall quite heavily. Instead I stayed home and painted the snow from indoors, using Artgraf water-soluble graphite. It took me some time to locate the block, but once I started painting with it I remembered how much I like the stuff. The chunk I have is in the shape of dressmaker’s chalk, but instead of drawing with it, I wet my brush and paint with it. It takes some getting used to because it seems really black when you put it on paper, but it dries much lighter. It’s wonderful for layering and building up darks like I did on my red velvet pillow.

Love this sketch, Shari. This is so helpful, Shari. I am going to copy it to study the values. I did a black and white was illustration yesterday and realized I had a lot to learn!

I’m glad it was helpful Pam. If you use water-soluble graphite, use lots of layers and let each one dry before adding the next one. It takes patience!!

You captured the textures perfectly!! I can feel the softness of that pillow, swiping my hands across the face to create patterns. 😁 I’m loving that sofa!

Such a lovely sketch. And you’ve solved a mystery for me. I have a small box of the colored squares of water-soluble Artgraf that I bought at the Royal Academy gift shop, but I couldn’t figure out how to draw with them properly. I am going to try to paint with them, great Idea!
