Something like a fountain pen
Posted: November 10, 2021 Filed under: Uncategorized 13 CommentsRecently a fellow sketcher wrote to me about a pen he thought I might like, so I ordered a few to try. He was right. I gave the pen a try last evening, and I like it a lot. The Pentel Fountain pen has a plastic nib which allows for thick or thin lines, depending on how you angle the pen, plus the ink is water-soluble, so it’s great for quick sketches that need a little tone, like my paint tubes. And the best thing is that the ink dries really black, not purplish like other pens I have used.
Something else to note from my sketcher friend: the ink washes out black but then does not wash out a second time so ideal if you want to add a wash of watercolour. I have not tried that yet but I will soon, and I’ll report back.

Thanks! Also, I recently tried the LAMY fountain pen, a recommendation from a student, and I love it! Will try this, too… The PITT-type pens are OUT for me… Love seeing your work. Emily

i believe this is a disposable pen.. these days we should not be encouraging a throwaway fountain pen.

You are right. Perhaps you can share how you use are supplies in a sustainable and responsible way. Any tips would be appreciated.

The nib looks like the Pentel Tradio pen which I love to write with and have used for years. I don’t believe I’ve tried to sketch with it but its description suggests it’s used for calligraphy and sketching. By the descriptions (at http://www.jetpens.com) of your new pen, Pentel Pulaman MJ20, and the Pentel Tradio Pulaman I’m not sure what the difference is. Thanks for sharing a new tool.

Evening, hope all is well with you.
You posted the name of WindowSwap, which is great, but is there another site whete you can punch in a city/village and country for the same results?? I’m the guy in Hamilton, NY,that has asked you to do a workshop down this way, and you thought Watkins Glen would be a great spot. I know the pandemic has been terrible/trying for everyone, and would not expect you to give this a top priority, but maybe 2023 or 2024. Your blog is very interesting, and I love your style of painting. Things never look like a photograph, but as you wish to represent them. Your one video on “The bad bay” was excellent, and I have several more to go through. Thanks again. Be well. Dennis

Hi Dennis, It’s so nice to hear from you. Glad you had a look at Window Swap. Have you tried painting from Google Street View? I know a lot of sketchers did that at the start of Covid.
Of course I remember you, and I would still like to paint at Watkins Glen. Maybe now that things are opening up again as far as the Canada US border goes, we can try to reschedule something.
And glad to hear that you liked the LA Malbaie video. That was some wind, right??
