Sunday morning in Lachine
Posted: December 11, 2022 Filed under: Uncategorized 29 CommentsI love the quiet of a Sunday morning in the old part of Lachine. Especially when it’s cold out. And grey. People are out only by necessity — to walk dogs, to smoke a cigarette, to pick up milk at the dep. It’s very different from spring and summer when there are visitors from other parts of the city who come to stroll along the lake and picnic in the park. And far less interesting.
Despite the cold, I painted from my car. I enjoy setting up the drawing for a scene like this. Each shape is a piece of the puzzle. I start with the buildings but if I’m lucky a smoker or a dog walker will walk into the scene and give a bit of life to the bleakness of the street on a cold and grey Sunday morning in Lachine.

Looks like an early morning scene before the town wakes up. I like that there isn’t a lot of variety in color. You can feel the cold in this!

My grey-day sketches always look dull but I can see that it’s possible to perk up an overcast day sketch without the light looking mismatched. Using slightly desaturated but still attractive hues looks like the way to go.

Love the sketch, especially with people added. Lachine is my favourite place to visit (have family there) when I come to Montreal. It’s so walkable! Wonder if you could do a sketch/watercolour of a scene showing the typical twisted staircases on the buildings in Montreal?

Thanks for having a look Peri. I have wanted to do those outdoor staircases for many years, especially in winter. The problem in winter, though, is always where to find parking because the streets never get cleaned right away.

I love this and hope I can absorb some of your ability to depict an ordinary winter scene. The whites of the paper that you leave really enhance the subtle colors and blocky shapes.

I’m studying your picture and trying to work out how you’ve made a dull grey day colourful! I can see the colours are softly desaturated, and there are warms and cools. It’s lovely.

Well, I used a limited palette but I always try to shift the greys from warm to cool and back again so there’s a variation in the temperature. Thanks for having a look!
