Pots on my stairs
Posted: May 12, 2023 Filed under: Uncategorized 41 CommentsI bought a four-pack of herbs at Costco this morning — basil, thyme and two types of oregano. And because I’ve been filming a new online course indoors all week and haven’t been able to enjoy the spring weather, I rushed to put away the groceries so I could get out and sketch these. I guess my arrangement wasn’t very creative but the shadows on the ground were great and it felt so good to be outdoors. These herbs will go into the ground eventually but before that I may just have to rearrange them and paint them again.
Painted on Arches 140 lb cold press paper using lots of my special shadow recipe: cerulean blue, violet and a bit of yellow.

Your shadows are beautiful. Which violet and yellow do you use?
Thanks Sheila. I use Carbazole Violet. It packs a punch so I just use a tiny bit.
Beautiful! The values tell the story!

Be careful where you plant the oregano, it spreads like wild fire!

It actually doesn’t here. I guess it’s too cold!
Such a simple picture, but the results are anything but simple!! Love the shadows and the light on the leaves! Beautiful, Shari 😁👍

They look good enough to eat! Looking forward to seeing your new on line course, and seeing you again in Cape Ann!!
Denise, I didn’t even know you were coming to Cape Ann!! I’m so happy to read this. After I saw your email I asked Slow River Studio for my class lists and there you are! Hooray!
I’m thrilled to have “made the list”! We are looking forward to visiting this area again- and this time I’ll get to paint!
Such a simple subject but your shadows gave it a wonderful look!
Thanks Joan!
Wonderful! Bright and fresh. You do make common things so desirable. I like this version of your herb painting
Many thanks Elaine!

Thank you so much, Shari, for the inspiration on making gorgeous colorful gray shadows!
You’re welcome Lynn. Glad you like it!!
Your beautiful grays caused me to reopen your wonderful book, “Working with Color,” and revisit the chapter on neutrals. Your teaching is always great, and that chapter is especially helpful. Thank you!
