A Week in Provence, France

I’ve taught in many beautiful locales but I have to say that sketching in Provence, France is a standout in my teaching career. Maybe it was because every day began with pain au chocolate, fresh peaches and local cheeses. Or maybe because the South of France is blessed with a magical light and there’s something captivating around every corner and down every cobbled street, just waiting to be sketched.

For all these reasons — and a hundred more — I am thrilled to announce my return to Provence, to once again teach with wonderful hosts Jackie and Valerie from French Escapade. Expect beautiful accommodations and delicious food. As well as sketching locations that include the 11th-century monastery of Saint Paul de Mausole, where Van Gogh spent a year, a vibrant market town, a Medieval village and the warm red buildings of Roussillon. Dates are June 15 – 22 and June 22 – 29, 2024.

Landscapes, Towns and Villages in Watercolour

I am absolutely delighted to be giving my first workshop with Big Sky Art at The White House in Norfolk. For this workshop, I will be demonstrating how a sketchbook can enhance every travel experience. In my own travels, I sketch all the time, and expect to return home with a sketchbook positively bursting with landscapes, architecture, watercraft, portraits and vignettes. It’s going to be an amazing week with spectacular painting locations, gorgeous accommodations and great food from the local farms. You can find dates, prices and all the details here.

Bar Harbor, Maine

Down East Vistas:
Sketching the Coastal Beauty of Bar Harbor in Watercolor

Acadia National Park is beautiful in all seasons, but at its most spectacular in autumn. In this workshop we’ll hop around the island to find the most sketchable spots — scenic villages and secluded harbors, with their fishing boats at anchor and maritime gardens, as well as rugged coastal scenes animated with jagged rocks and crashing waves. There’s no shortage of scenes to capture in our sketchbooks. If you love plein air sketching in watercolor, this workshop is for you. Join me as we explore the ever-shifting autumn vistas of the town of Bar Harbor and scenic Acadia National Park.

Tanque Verde Ranch, Tucson, Arizona

Vibrant Watercolours: Sketching Desert Hues

Let’s meet at Tanque Verde ranch, where we’ll experience together the wild beauty of the desert and the surrounding mountain vistas, which make this place so unique. I’ve designed this workshop to give you not only confidence sketching desert scenes — but also the confidence to sketch wherever you happen to be. I’ll show you how to keep your watercolor sketches loose, fresh and vibrant. And I’ll share my techniques for capturing the beauty that surrounds us, with special emphasis on color and composition.

    Like

    • HI Lynn,
I think it would be preferable if you had some drawing experience before you do my workshops. For first-timers I suggest taking a beginner drawing class and then taking my workshop. There are many offered in the Montreal area and having that experience would really help you before you launch into watercolour.

    Like

    • Hi Huguette. I have no classes in the winter because I have no venue to hold them in. Plus I teach in a CEGEP so it is hard for me to hold classes at night. The summer is the best time for my workshops because I am not in school then.

      Like

      • Thanks for responding to my request and I will be following up with you for next summer. However, if it is ok with you you can give us courses at my house on your free time from Cegep. I can set up for the 4 of us. Think about it and let me know. We are all retirees but active in watercolour. Otherwise it will be for next summer. Thank you again.

    Dear Shari,

I love your paintings/sketches. May I just ask, when you paint, do you wet the whole of the page or do you just wet the area you are working on, or do you just make the colour very dilute before putting it on the paper?

    Many thanks.

    • Hi Ann,
So glad you like the work. I have so many ways of working. Sometimes I wet the whole sheets (as in Baie des Rochers), sometimes I wet an area and sometimes I paint on dry paper. But one thing I try to do is make the colour as saturated as possible.
