Public Hall
Posted: December 14, 2011 Filed under: Uncategorized 3 CommentsYesterday my friend Jane gave me a guided tour of old Lachine. There’s so much to sketch in that part of town — lots of beautiful churches (including one of the oldest on the island of Montreal), a fur trade museum, and a scenic waterfront next to the Lachine canal. That was part of the problem. Too much to choose from! I overworked 2 sketches and gave up in frustration. And in a last-ditch effort to post something today I stopped on a side street, took a deep breath, looked up, and then did this quick sketch of the roof the Public House and the electric wires. Sometimes things just don’t go as planned.

Hi Shari,
do you know why I love your drawings sooo much? It is because you leave them unfinished… when they are finished, my mind cannot continue the story, but when they are left unfinished, my mind wanders, putting a tad of colour there, a line here, leaving some white space. It permits me, as the viewer, to interact.
Do you start your paintings directly with the ink pen or do you start with a lead pen?
I looked at Butch Belair’s paintings, and you are right. They are incredible! What a talented individual, with a terrible name. LOL 😉
Hi Jane,
Thank you again for your thoughtful comments. Sometimes I work in pencil and then paint and other times I use a permanent pen and then a wash on top. But for this one I was so frustrated with my self I just started drawing and then just added a bit of colour. I’m glad you like Butch Belair’s work too. He’s quite amazing.
Love the looseness of this.
