Corner of Grand

It’s been a bit of an adjustment to sketch in New York City. My Montreal suburbia is pretty quiet, especially when I’m in my car. But here the horns are honking constantly, people are yelling, and every few minutes a fire truck flies by with a siren going at full volume. It’s pretty hard to focus. This morning I went out early before the stores opened in Soho and found a quiet spot near the corner of Grand.

Looks great! It has a NY feel … not at all like your Montreal work.
Did you have lots of people peering over your shoulder or did they do that NY thing of ignoring you?

    • I was sitting on a bench against the wall so no one could look over my shoulder but some people stopped to look. Most people just ignored me. New Yorkers are pretty blasé.

      • Ross C says:

Blasé is good in a big city… much better than pick-pockets, muggings or worse.
Did you use your phone to photograph this or have you found a scanner?

      • No, this is a photo but now that I’m home I think I will rescan everything. They look horrible on the big screen!!

      • Ross C says:

The scanning is a big improvement. But what are those diagonal shadows from?

      • Not quite sure now. I think the fire escapes. Usually I take a reference photo but it was so chaotic on New York that I forgot.
