Hosta la vista baby
Posted: June 7, 2012 Filed under: Uncategorized 9 CommentsAfter two days of teaching I stayed home today to try out a few new things. One of them is a square multipurpose sketchbook that I purchased in New York. It’s a challenging format to compose with but it’s a good change after working so many horizontal and vertical sketches. This hosta was drawn using my Lamy pen and bulletproof ink which surprisingly did not bleed when I put a wash on top of it. That means it was the paper I was using and not the ink that was causing problems. I guess my Moleskines have too much cotton in the paper and not enough cellulose. Now I know.

Shari I have just started to watercolor for a year or so. I have taken some classes and I must say sometimes it is so unforgivinging but I am going to persevere. I am enjoying your site sooo much. It is giving me inspiration. barb
Thanks Barb. I’m glad you like the site. Don’t give up on watercolour — it gets easier with practice. Use good paper and paints. That will make you more successful. And invest in a good brush.
I like the sketch and particularly the square format… that was worth trying.
But do you think you could make one of your urban landscapes work in a square format? Perhaps in Paris… there may be a few good subjects there.
I think I may have to take this square sketchbook with me. I like the format and there may be one or two things to sketch in Paris.
Hi Shari, I love the square format.
I have a question for you that others might benefit from also. When you buy a good quality brush, they come in a see-through plastic tube to protect the brush… do you always keep your brushes in those plastic thingies? Or only for travelling? Or you never put them back on?
I love the square format too. I will be doing more of these.
As for the brush: good question. Throw that thing out! That will ruin your brush because if there are stray hairs it will bend them backwards. So get a good brush holder like mine at Omer. They are inexpensive and will keep your brushes in good shape. Or use a canvas holder or even a bamboo mat. It would be a shame to buy a good brush and bend it out of shape.
Haaaah… excellent. I will do! So now I am ready for the South 😉
Love these green yellowish colours. I have my garden filled with Hosta’s never thought of drawing/painting them. I will.
I love hostas. I have been attempting to sket them myself. These are beautiful.
