High Gothic

Victor Hugo described Strasbourg cathedral as a “gigantic and delicate marvel” (Wikipedia is good for bits like that!) which makes it very difficult to paint. It’s all spikes and spires and pink sandstone. The north tower was completed in 1439 but the south tower was never built ( I believe it would have created a building that was too heavy) which it makes it a very unique structure. I tried to give an impression of it with a brush rather draw all the details with a pen which would have probably taken all day.

Great treatment Shari. I find your composition makes the building really grounded while at the same time reaching hopefully for the sky (or heaven?) – and at the same time the sense of a great expansive structure. Just terrific, gets better the more I look at it. Which is a good thing, right? Are you scanning these latest posts somewhere? Or just taking a photo of them? Just wondered.

You did a great job capturing this complex subject with your brush strokes. I continue to be in awe of your skill. :o)

I absolutely LOVE, LOVE this one, Shar! Are those flags hanging in the foreground? I like the juxtaposition of delicate fabric waving in the wind before a solid stone structure that has been there for so much of history . . . .

    Yet another excellent piece.

And I didn’t realize these were just photos of your sketches, you can’t tell from seeing them online!

    • Kots, those are not flags in the foreground. Do you mean the green? That is another roof.
These have all been rescanned. So while I’m away I photograph them on my phone. Crop them with a Photoshop iPhone app and then upload to the WordPress app. Then when I get home I rescan for better colour, on my great Epson scanner. I will do the same thing in Santo Domingo. Hope the WiFi at the hotel works well.
