Posted: July 8, 2012 Filed under: Uncategorized 14 CommentsI found this wonderful little arrangement at the Beaconsfield Yacht Club. I went there with the intention of painting the boats but when I saw this I changed my mind. How could I resist those three pails in primary colours?
Today is the third and final day of paper comparisons. This was painted on a block of Fabriano Watercolour Studio and I was quite disappointed with this paper. I’m not satisfied with the texture of the paper itself (look at the top left corner of the painting to see what I mean) and it didn’t carry a wash well at all. It would probably be fine for a quick sketch but not for something with more subtle watercolour effects and washes. So this will not be in my bag to Santo Domingo this week. It was fine for small flat areas like in the pails but I found that when I tried to apply a large wash the edges dried too quickly. It could be because this paper has only 20% cotton content and I am used to paper made with 100% cotton.

You find beauty and interest in everything Shari, and express it with such sensitivity 🙂
Thank you for your info on papers.
Thanks Mary!
Enjoyed your experiment with the various papers. Thanks for that. Could you tell me what colours you use to create the dark greens in the trees on the left?
Glad you liked it Valerie. For those deep, dark greens I used sap green, ultramarine and a bit of alizarin.
Very generous of you to share your experiments with the papers and love all those sketches,
Have a great trip !
Elaine
Thanks Elaine. Watch for the posts from Santo Domingo.
You are right with the Fabriano Studio paper. I have a block of this paper and I don’t use it for the same reasons as yours. Colors are always dull on this paper. Thank you for the daily sketches, it is very motivating to do the same!
So glad you like the sketches Charles. There is a better quality of Fabriano block, I think it is artistico. Have you ever tried that?
No, I didn’t. I like very much the Arches Grain fin because it is easy to draw on it. When I travel, I try to find new kinds of paper. The Saunders Waterford is a wonder, but it is impossible to find it here in Montreal or Ottawa.
I don’t know the Arches Grain fin. I will have to try some. Does it come in sheets or blocks? And where do you get the Saunders Waterford? Is it available online?
Arches Grain fin comes in block (easy to recognize, the cover is green, very green! It comes in sheets also. Saunders Wateford can be bought on line at Woolfitts.com (an art store in Toronto). To know more about the paper, go to stcuthbertsmill.com. Sometimes I find nice papers at Wallack’s in Ottawa. They have many things that we don’t find in Montreal.
Thanks for all these useful links. I will check them out. I have used Saunders paper, as well as Lanaquarelle but I have never heard of Woolfitts. I always like to find Canadian resources.
After having checked with Woolfits, I learned that they sell only to stores, not to individuals. So the best way to explore new papers is to make arrangements with an efficient art store that will be able to order for you.
Thanks for checking Charles.
