Three layers of green
Posted: August 31, 2012 Filed under: Uncategorized 4 CommentsI picked this little area at the Botanical Gardens because it was the reverse of the scenes I usually draw. Most of the time the dark green trees are in the background and the grass in the foreground is light. But sitting on the hill in the Chinese garden, I looked through the dark layer of trees to the sunlight foliage beyond. The hosta in the foreground is mostly a wash of cerulean blue with few darks added in later.

Hi Shari
Bruce N. recommended your site to me and he is right, it is excellent. I liked your Quarry painting as it made me feel as though I was there.
I like this sketch very much too. I find that it makes me very aware of the change in focus.
Great stuff!
Chris
Well thanks to Bruce. So glad you like the site Chris and glad you like the rocks. I guess you are talking about the one I did in the Botanical Gardens.
Love the back lighting with the darks in the middle. What colours did you use to mix your dark greens. I always have trouble getting my darks really dark in watercolour.
I probably used a combination of ultramarine, sap green and some alizarin for those really dark greens. But just a bit of the alizarin since it is very strong.
