No right turn

Montreal has so many interesting corners but it is often hard for me to find a parking spot where I get a good sketching view. I found a spot on the corner of Faillon and Chateaubriand and miraculously there were none of those pesky “Residents Only” parking signs.

Good sketch. But, what a strange little corner on that building!
Does this mean that you are back in the car studio “permanently” now? Has the weather changed that quickly?

    • Montreal is full of strange little architectural oddities like this and I hope to find some more to sketch. The weather is changing and next week it will get cold. I even heard some snow in the forecast in the western part of Canada. First time I’ve heard the “s” word this autumn.

nice sketch, walking around Montreal is the best way to “see” it, there are so many wonderful little interesting items to catch your eye if you are “in the moment”. Thanks for sharing one, keep sketching I love to see your work.

I am intrigued and curious to know what you use to create lines that give definition to your sketches. Some are thick and dark, others are hair-line thin which give emphasis where needed, and create a focus for the eye. My question is that for these outlines, are you working with a particular combination of pens, crayons and/or very fine brushes?
I would be interested to know what you recommend and what works best on different types
of surface. My apologies iif you have covered this subject before …….if you have made reference to it , I missed it. I have never done a great deal of sketching and have worked
mostly indoors, but I am feeling inspired! Thank you Shari.

    • Thanks Ruth. I mostly draw lines with three things: sometimes I use just pencil but if I want a darker line I use a Micron 005 pen (very fine) or a Lamy Safari fountain pen which these days has grey ink in it. I think I did this drawing with the fountain pen and then added watercolour on top of that. That is mostly all I use.
Great to hear that you are inspired. Go for it!!

Interesting remarks about the odd corner. They are indeed very common in Montreal. I really love this Shari. Another great composition, love the interplay of muted primaries. It really captures what feels like a very familiar corner.

    • Thanks Alison. It does seem familiar yet I had never been there before. I suppose it is because so many corners of Montreal look like a variation on this one.
