My favourite tree
Posted: October 20, 2012 Filed under: Uncategorized 20 CommentsPerfect maple trees are difficult to find in my neighbourhood because many of them have had branches hacked off in a seemingly indiscriminate way by the power company. Some have gaping holes in the middle or huge limbs missing but this one must be far enough away from the wires to have been left intact. I’ve been wanting to paint this tree for a long time but couldn’t figure out how to fit it all on the page. I didn’t manage to get the full dome of the foliage but the part that I really wanted to paint was the contrast between the electric yellow of the autumn leaves against the dark of the trunk.

Wow! Makes me want to go out and sketch at the arboretum near by. Beautiful!
Go for it Gail. We have an arboretum near my house but I haven’t gone yet either.
Real nice Shari. I took your recommendation of yesterday and purchased the book. Thanks.
Leslie
I’m glad you found that useful Leslie.
They’re all my favorites right now..Lovely.
Aren’t they gorgeous now Monique?? I will be sad when all the leaves are down.
Well done. Love the shadows on the trunk and under the tree.
Thanks Valerie!!
love this Shari! It looks like firworks exploding. You aced the Acer.
( maples belong to the Acer species…a little horticultural humour.)
John, you are the king of tree drawing so I am so happy I did justice to the Acer. Thanks!!
dear Shari,
I think this is one of my favorites. Keep up the good work,
Julie
Julie, you probably pass this tree every day on your walk…
Thanks!
Electric yellow is an excellent description! This is just sparkling with luminosity! Wow!
Thanks Angie!!
Stunning! For someone who never sees maple trees in their full glory, this almost replaces the need for me to see a photo… I did say “almost”.
I think that you have done really well at capturing the impression of the masses of the foliage… which I imagine is really difficult in watercolour. I particularly like the shapes at the edges of the foliage (and under the tree)… the small angular bits… they are very leaf-like.
Thanks Ross!!
Fantastic, exploding colours. Autumn is so beautiful at present, I wish I had time to go out and sketch as well. At least I have your sketch to admire the colours…
Thanks René. It is so amazing outside but it is going to end soon and then it will be grey for so many months : (
Awesome!!!
Thanks!
