Green with envy
Posted: October 18, 2016 Filed under: Uncategorized 44 CommentsLast week Australian sketcher Jane Blundell was in town giving a workshop, but at the last minute I had to give up my spot as a participant because of work commitments. At the end of the session I stopped by to have a look, and I have to admit I was a little envious of the beautiful paintings of pears that people had done. I love painting pears, so I did some of my own today. No matter which way they stand or fall, pear shapes are always interesting to draw. And it’s a great exercise to paint green pears on a green striped cloth without using any green pigment. I painted this using Cerulean Blue and Hansa Yellow Medium, with a little Organic Vermilion washed in for the reddish blush on the pears.

Oh, so very pretty, Shari! Love that striped fabric and those pears look so real. Green is my favorite color, so this painting is really speaking to me! ☺️ What did you use to outline the pears? Is that pencil or a micron pen?
HI Linda. I used a pencil for this. The line is a little softer than the micron pen and I prefer it when I am painting a still life, and if I have more time.

I too, enjoy your posts so much, especially with some information about colour mixing. Makes me realise my own mixing is so random and pot luck. No wonder I’m seldom happy with results.
Just keep experimenting with colour Ivana. And occasionally make yourself notes to remember what mixes you like. That has helped me a lot. And try limited palettes too because that is how you really learn about each pigment.

Shari, as a new painter I’m wondering if each pear was painted at once, dropping in color or did you apply more than one wash with drying in between.
