Green with envy
Posted: October 18, 2016 Filed under: Uncategorized 44 CommentsLast week Australian sketcher Jane Blundell was in town giving a workshop, but at the last minute I had to give up my spot as a participant because of work commitments. At the end of the session I stopped by to have a look, and I have to admit I was a little envious of the beautiful paintings of pears that people had done. I love painting pears, so I did some of my own today. No matter which way they stand or fall, pear shapes are always interesting to draw. And it’s a great exercise to paint green pears on a green striped cloth without using any green pigment. I painted this using Cerulean Blue and Hansa Yellow Medium, with a little Organic Vermilion washed in for the reddish blush on the pears.

Delicious miamiam!

Thanks Karim!!
Absolutely LOVE your pears plus the fact that you used no green paint. My new favorite pear painting. Your fabric is terrific.
thanks Mary. It was only after I painted it that I realized there was no green paint in this. Kinda cool, I think.
Good enough to eat!
And I did!
So fresh! A talented approach I am sure Jane would approve!
I bet she would. She loves limited palettes too.
Wonderful, thanks for sharing the colors, an inspiring challenge.
Thanks Elaine!
Hi Shari, thanks for providing all these triads and color mixes in your recent posts. They are helpful and produce lovely effects.
Thanks so much Pam. Always experimenting and trying new things, and happy to share the results.
Oh, so very pretty, Shari! Love that striped fabric and those pears look so real. Green is my favorite color, so this painting is really speaking to me! ☺️ What did you use to outline the pears? Is that pencil or a micron pen?
HI Linda. I used a pencil for this. The line is a little softer than the micron pen and I prefer it when I am painting a still life, and if I have more time.
Double like 👍👍 delicious greens.
Double like is good Ros!
Wonderful painting. I feel a quince painting coming on soon! Just as fascinating as pears but with added knobbliness!
Quince. I think I have painted those once but it may be time to try again. thanks Michael.
Very pear-ish and juicy! And interesting color combination 🌺
Thanks so much Marina!
Shari
You continue to teach me color interactions. I am so happy when I receive your posts!
I am so happy when I hear from you too Lisa. Hope you are well.

Thanks!
Nicely done – so subtle, yet it is all ‘there’.
Thanks so much Chris.
Amazingly beautiful !
Many thanks Andy.
Wonderful what you were able to achieve without using green! Love it!!!
Thanks Joan!
I thought I had seen enough of watercolor pear paintings to last a lifetime…..however, you give new meaning to this subject! Gorgeous colors and I love the composition.
Just yummy!
It’s true, people love to paint pears, including me. Their shapes are hard to resist. Thanks Linda.
I never tire of seeing watercolor paintings/sketches of pears. Other fruits don’t have the same appeal, wonder why? But pears! Lovely. Well done.
Thanks Joan. I know what you mean about pears. I think the shape is very appealing and they are each a little different.
Shari,
Iâll never look at pears the same! Your rendition is exquisite! I always loved to eat pears and now there are pears as sweet candy for my eyes.
I so appreciate your posts and sharing of your talents. Thank you, Bernadette
Thanks so much Bernadette!
I too, enjoy your posts so much, especially with some information about colour mixing. Makes me realise my own mixing is so random and pot luck. No wonder I’m seldom happy with results.
Just keep experimenting with colour Ivana. And occasionally make yourself notes to remember what mixes you like. That has helped me a lot. And try limited palettes too because that is how you really learn about each pigment.
Love it!!! wonderful watercolor!
Thanks so much Patricia.
The pears and cloth are just amazingly beautiful. So simply stated, yet I could look at them forever. What are my chances of buying the painting?
Hi Laurie,
You have a pretty good chance of owning the painting, since it is still in my possession. I’ll send you an email, ok?
Shari
I love “your pears” so beautiful. Thanks for sharing your beautiful work.
Shari, as a new painter I’m wondering if each pear was painted at once, dropping in color or did you apply more than one wash with drying in between.
