The hidden ones
Posted: May 28, 2018 Filed under: Uncategorized 26 CommentsIn my garden there are masses of tiny flowers that are hidden under bigger, showier things. I picked a bunch of them and stuck them in a glass, and painted them just as they started to wilt. These delicate creatures don’t last long.
I don’t have a window sill with a wide shelf, and my unfortunately my shiny black kitchen countertop is not a great foil for this, so I set up a small folding table in front of the patio door. That seemed to work just fine. Sketched on Saunders Waterford rough paper, 15″ x 11″.

Your flower studies are breathtaking. Thanks for sharing. They inspire me.
Thank you for writing Betsy. This is always the best time in my garden and I am happy to share!
Wow, just wow Shari!
Well, thank you!
You certainly captured their essence. Love the reflective light in the shadows cast by the flowers too that dapples across the tabletop. So lovely.
Thanks so much.
Gorgeous, Shari!
Thanks Nel!
Lovely! I am really learning about shadows/values/lights and darks from your sketches. I am particularly entranced by the double shadow of the vase on the table.
Kathy, those shadows are so hard to do. There were multiple light sources but I didn’t want to be too realistic. Just an impression, really. Every painting is a learning experience.
Wow Shari, this is absolutely stunning!
Many thanks Mary.
Seems like bleeding heart to me, love your style!
Seems like that to me too. Thanks Luce.
My oh my, this is exquisite! I recently got a bouquet of mixed flowers and tried many times to capture the essence. I tried hard not to overwork, to simplify. Your example shows me what I tried desperately to achieve.
Thank you for the inspiration to continue.
Thank you Bernadette. After buying flowers at the store all winter, it really is a pleasure to pick some flowers outside.
You are a genuine master. To be able to paint like you would be a dream come true:)
Ah, now I am embarrassed by this high praise. But thank you.
Super!!! I love the repetition of the color of the purple flowers in the shadow. Love this!
Thanks Joan!
Now I’ll have to see what is growing outside between the obvious flowers. Your flower paintings say so much. Not sure which I like more-the flowers or your rendition of the glass containers. Both are lovely.
I bet you’ll find some nice little flowers hiding in there Judy!
So fresh…and those shadows!
Thanks Jean!
Shari, you have perfectly captured the delicacy of this lovely garden bouquet! Your apparent ease and obvious skill tempt me to try my own. . . I am in the wild dunes of Western Denmark, where robust Rosa Rugosa (“beach roses”) nestle boldly against delicate, whiskery beach grass. A challenge!
Peggy, I think you are up for the challenge of roses and beach grass. Enjoy your time in Denmark.
