Sand pit

My unpacking in the new place is done and all that’s left is to hang pictures, so I took a break today to draw. It sure felt good.

On one of my first walks with Alice a few weeks ago, I discovered that if I go through a little wooded area at the end of my street, the trees open up and there’s something quite interesting to see. It’s a large rectangular lake, or maybe a big reservoir, with an industrial sand pit in the middle. A real working sand pit with trucks and shovels and diggers and all sorts of machinery, all surrounded by giant pyramids of light sand. It’s fascinating to see. I’ve been taking photos of it each time I go out, and I know there will be some watercolours of this coming soon.

It’s a very new landscape for me to understand, so I started by doing a pencil drawing of a small area in the middle of the lake. There are tons of other vignettes like this one, and after I do a series of them, I will work on some watercolours. I have no idea if the digging continues into winter, but I can’t wait to see this industrial landscape under a fresh layer of snow.

Fascinating. I never knew what a sandpit was. Moving is hard work. Did you move far from where you lived before? Looking forward to your drawings/painting of your new neighborhood.

  2. How fascinating!

I hope you will be very happy in your new place. Why did you move? Sorry for the personal question but don’t you miss the walk you did with Alice close to the skating lake?

That is so perfect for you! A landscape with working mechanical equipment? I bet we are going to see it in all seasons and palettes.
