New town
Posted: December 13, 2023 Filed under: Uncategorized 34 CommentsNow that I live in a new neighbourhood, I need new painting spots. My old ones are a little bit far now, plus it’s fun to discover new places. The town of Hudson seems like it will be the likely replacement for Pointe Claire Village, where I painted urban scenes for over ten years. There are a lot of similarities between the two towns: both are situated on a lake, both have boat clubs and both have lots of little old buildings and back lanes.
I went out to explore this morning, and found a good spot in the parking lot behind Cardinal Microbrewery. There was some interesting light on the jumble of structures out back, and the dumpster was an added bonus. Sketched on a pad of Arches CP paper, from the comfort of my car studio.

Oooh! Love the light and shadows and snow in this one!
Thanks so much Sharon!!
love this! So crisp and fresh! xx
Carol, thanks!!
Looks really great!
Donna, thank you so much.
Love it! Especially the winter sky❤️
Thanks Karen. There will certainly be more winter skies!
I love that you choose such everyday, homely subjects-I love these too. I had to snort when you added “dumpster was an added bonus.”
Ashley, you made me laugh out loud.
Good!
Beautiful light Shari. Exquisite rendering!

Merci Karim. xoxo
You’re truly back!
Really great light, interesting building backsides and that bright dumpster zooms all perspective, even more forward.
I was especially blown away by the tent’s interior view – you are a master at evoking feelings of familiarity with the most minimal strokes and just the right colour choice – a great visit today.
Chris, I appreciate hearing from you. Your comments are always so thoughtful. Hope all is well with you.
So glad you’re back!
Looking forward to all of your new discoveries.
I’m glad to be back too!!
Shari, when you paint a sketchbook scene like this, how long do you spend painting in your car?
HI Marie, Thanks for asking about this. I guess I spend a little over an hour when I paint in the car. Of course in winter it depends on how cold it is. This week it was unusually warm so I was able to stay a little longer.
Oooo! LOVE this!!!👌
Lori, thanks!!
That’s backside beautification! You can make the backside/trashy-side of a building look pretty good. Glad you’re out exploring your new town.
Thanks so much De. It feels great to explore the new surroundings!

Another clipped comment but I assume it was something nice, so thank you!!
It will be so fun to discover new spots I’m looking forward to seeing them all.
Thanks Kelly. I am looking forward to finding them.
Just have to express it! I love your work so much! And you’re such a great teacher! Best to you in the New Year!
Maria, thank so much!! And the best to you too!!
Washes so clean and fresh…so you! ❤️
Thanks Bernadette!!
I am glad to hear that you will be sketching and painting in the Hudson area. I am familiar with Hudson Heights from 60 years ago. There is an old Anglican Church (St James I think) and as a stone structure it might interest you for sketching. There used to be a horse farm across from it; now the area next to the old barn is used as a bird rescue called Le Nichoir!
Thanks Jean. I’m looking forward to discovering more in Hudson. So far I’ve mostly explored places to buy groceries, but I will definitely be going there more often this winter. As for Le Nichoir, I know of it but have no idea where it is. Happy new year to you!
The old farmhouse across from the Anglican Church used to belong to Sydenham Farm, named after Lord Sydenham, governor of “Canada “ from 1839-1841. That suggests the era when that farm was first established. I don’t know who owns the house now. It was the home of the Clark family for many decades.
