Tumacácori and a new video

Good advice on where to sketch often comes from other sketchers, so during my recent teaching trip in Arizona, I visited both San José de Tumacácori and San Xavier del Bac, based on recommendations from students. Both were great sketching spots and interesting structures to draw, although very different in character. San Xavier has been maintained and restored, while Tumacácori was abandoned around 1856. The site has since been restored and is now a National Historic Park, and although it’s not as spectacular as San Xavier, it’s still a fascinating place to visit and to draw. Both sites are within a short drive of each other, so if you are in the Tucson vicinity, it’s worth it to spend some time at both.

And since drawing San Xavier del Bac three times wasn’t enough for me, I drew it a fourth time and recorded the process on video. It’s up on my YouTube channel now. Check it out if you are curious.

Really nice to see how you work (your colour decisions are so clear and so precise – a joy to observe (& learn)).

    Thx so much 🙂

Both of these have a lot of character. It is nice to get recommendations from other artist for places to sketch. I will have to go over to see your You Tube sketch.

I love this post! Mike and I just painted the mission – – inspired by this post. We were there several years ago and I’ve wanted to sketch it but would always forget. Thanks for the inspiration. I’m happy with how both of our turned out. I’ll post them on our Instagram (pamenzreal).

Like others, I have been to both sites as we visit the Tucson area at least once a year. I’ve taken many pictures but never sketched them. Now I am inspired! Thanks
