Excepté Véhicules Autorisés
Posted: July 30, 2024 Filed under: Uncategorized 26 CommentsIt’s probably too hot to be outside to paint this week but I try to get out and back before the worst of it. I am happy to be home this summer and I am trying to take full advantage of getting to know my new surroundings.
Today I painted again at the Hudson History Garden. The peonies are finished and there’s not much blooming this week but I loved the view from the parking lot across the street. The old houses are almost hidden by the vegetation, and what gave it a sense of place for me were the signs indicating that there’s no entry up the lane except for authorized vehicles going to the fire station.
This is a complex scene, and I think under different circumstances, I probably would have taken more time with both the drawing and the painting, but in this heat I painted fast. I think the result conveys the chaos of overgrown midsummer vegetation.

What is the pen you are using now?
Hi Ruth, there is no pen in this one, just a pencil drawing. But when I do use a pen, it’s the platinum carbon desk pen. Same as always.
Magnifique! We were just across the river, on the opposite shore at Oka, doing some sketching with Croquis Urbain des Basses Laurentides.
Oh wow, I painted the boats at Oka from the yacht club in Hudson. I could see them very far away!!
This is amazing! And the vegetation is so fabulous! Can’t believe you painted it fast🙄
I was throwing it on there like crazy. Just wanted to get home to my AC!!
I almost hate to admit that abandoned or severely neglected houses draw my attention everytime. You made a great representation of weed happy yard. Always appreciate you sharing your creative art adventures.
Those are always the best places to paint! I am not afraid to admit that a good pile is junk is more interesting than almost anything else. Glad you liked the weedy yard!
I think doing this as a quick sketch helped capture the looseness and variety of the vegetation surrounding these great buildings. Thanks for sharing and explaining your thinking while doing this.
Glad you liked it Joan. I hope you’re having a great summer with lots of sketch outings!
Shari, this is lovely! So fresh, like all your sketches!
Thanks Poppy!!
There are tons of flowers blooming now in Maine!
Mary, I hope you are getting out to paint them!!
Love love love it! Now you got me all motivated to do a sketch at a botanical garden I may be visiting this week but was hesitating to bring my sketch kit because of time constraint (just doing a quick tour with some friends and don’t want to hold them up!)- thanks for showing what’s possible when time is of the essence!
Gayle, I hope you got out to paint in the gardens. Even if you just did an outline and colour later, that’s good too. Thanks for having a look at my weedy front yard.
I can only imagine that the paint dried faster in this heat 🙂
This is lovely. I like the contrast of the signs – complementary colour-wise and order vs. chaos. …and, as always, your strong sense of light – the shaded fronts of your houses give so much dimension without this viewer realizing it right away. Everything just looks perfect. Thanks 🙂
Chris, you’re right. The paint dried faster than usual and I had to keep my brush really wet. As for the signs, I was originally going to leave them out but I’m happy I kept them. I like what they add to the scene.
Love that scene..I think it was there I saw hundreds of Iris planted? That grey stone building had the best jewelry..import store 100 yrs ago I am stretching it:)..Barkhor:)
Definitely before my time! I don’t mean my life time but I mean before we lived here. Unfortunately we moved here after they closed Finnegans. I used to love that place.
You make the ordinary look amazing!
It’s great to hear from you, Elaine. I hope all is well. Thanks for having a look!! Can’t wait to see you in the Alps.
Hi Shari, I love everithing in this sketch, and the composition is just WOW! The same scene in my neaborhood around Boucherville. But I never though to plaint it! Great idea. On what paper did you skech? Have good summer… Nicole
Hi Nicole. Glad you like this. I used a pad of Arches, 140 lb for this one.
I admire how you treat the foreground of greenery and as I continue working on my skills it is interesting to see how you use the different shades to create movement and the shapes and shadows.
Thanks Maureen!!
