Ten years ago

I haven’t had much time to write this week. I’ve been painting. I took advantage of the oppressive heat outdoors and then some rainy days to work on some larger format watercolours in my studio.

Ever since my sister and I took a trip to Newfoundland with our dad in 2014 (ten years ago, almost to the day, in fact), I’ve been wanting to paint some of the scenes that made an impression on me at the time. This painting is a scene from Elliston, also known as The Root Cellar Capital of the World. I loved the angles and the hard edges of the layered rocks sandwiched between two layers of waves — one from the water and one from the rolling hills in the distance. I painted this on a sheet of Arches CP 140 lb.

We also spent some time in St. John’s — Newfoundland and Labrador’s capital city. I remember that it rained a lot of that week, so to convey the mist and atmosphere, I painted this half-sheet harbour scene on a damp sheet of paper. I still have many images that I want to capture from that week, and with the remnants of Hurricane Debby upon us today, I think it will be another day in studio.

New on YouTube, but not that new

A few years ago I sketched the iconic snack bar Chez Chantal in La Malbaie. We recorded my sketch on video but it’s been a busy few years and we never had time to edit it and upload it to YouTube. But it’s there now, so check it out if you are interested.
