Boathouses on the channel

Every summer, if the stars align, I get a chance to paint these classic Adirondack boathouses. From my viewpoint on a dock that’s on a narrow channel between two lakes, I can hear the call of the resident loons and occasionally catch sight of a bald eagle flying low over the pines behind me. It’s quite an experience.

This weekend I sketched four of the boathouses on a spread in my A4 sketchbook, and I included a bit of lettering (note my corrected spelling error!) and a gas can in the remaining space on the page. It was a calm morning with perfect reflections, disturbed only by the occasional duck or early morning kayakers. If you want to learn more about how to paint water and reflections, I’ve written an article in the September/October issue of Artists Magazine. It’s available online and in stores now.

These are wonderful, Shari. Makes me want to lay back in a hammock and listen to the sounds of the loons and rippling water. So relaxing.

Just charming as always makes me feel like I’m right there with you. I trust you’re safe and sound after all the news about flooding in Montreal

    • Thanks for checking in Maureen. Yes, all is well at our house but there are some terribly hard-hit areas in Montreal. My sister drove through a neighbourhood close to her house the other day where almost every house had carpets and furniture and drywall out on the lawn. I feel terrible for these people.

Love the water technique and ordered your article. What were the selections for mixing your greens?

    • HI Elaine,
I didn’t have anything different on my palette for the greens. It was probably a mix of Hooker’s Green, a bit of Ultramarine and some Hansa Yellow. It was only a few days ago, so I should remember, but there was a lot of noise on that dock and it was hard to focus : (
I hope you enjoy the article.
      Shari

I can just imagine sitting on the dock in the quiet of the morning, sketching these little treasures. Each has that quirky, special look to it. These make me smile. Thanks!
