Cornfield
Posted: October 8, 2024 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: cornfield, step-by-step, watercolour 12 CommentsCornfields are everywhere around here. I passed many on my way to paint this scene the other day. I was hoping to paint the corn on location but there’s nowhere to set up my easel by the side of road without getting plowed down by a tractor or a combine harvester, so I took a bunch of photos and then painted back in my studio.
I wasn’t sure what to do with this type of composition. There’s really no focus. It’s just a pattern of colours and contrasts. I also wanted to convey the light coming through the stalks and hitting the tops of the floppy leaves, as well as give a sense of all the colours that you see when you get close to the stalks and the decaying foliage.
If you want to see the step-by-step photos of how I painted the cornfield, it’s in the October issue of my newsletter “The Wheelbarrow”. If you’re not on the mailing list, you can sign up here. Also new is a downloadable pdf “25 Ideas to Get You Sketching Everyday“. Have a look!

I love your work and have tried to sign up for The Wheelbarrow at least twice before. Today the link takes you to the 25 ideas for sketching .
Thanks Nancy. I fixed the link. You should receive it now!!
Wonderful! Can’t wait to get the “Wheelbarrow”!
I live amongst cornfields like your painting. Yours are so real-like I can reach out and touch.
Ooooo! I like it! The light shining through the translucent leaves on the stalks grabbed my eye and is so lovely.
You nailed a very tough subject and I’m looking forward to seeing the step-by-step! I think I’m on your mailing list for the Wheelbarrow but haven’t gotten the October issue. Still to come?
You nailed a really tough subject (!) and I’m looking forward to seeing your step-by-step! I’m subscribed to the Wheelbarrow but haven’t seen the October issue . . . still to come?
HI! Thanks for having a look! The new Wheelbarrow will be out on Monday morning.
Hi Shari, just checked out your “25 Ideas to Get You Sketching Everyday”. Lots of very useful info and tips ( along with some great sketches). Thanks for offering this!
I like how the red leaves seem to play amongst all of the beautiful greens. Nice contrast, great energy – it all works 🙂
Love this one. 🙂
Thanks so much!
