Red shed in shade

You might think this red shed is located on a country road, deep in the woods somewhere. Not at all. It’s just off a main road, and right next to a big Shell gas station/depanneur. It’s part of a riding stable complex, and I pass it almost every day when I’m out and about. The constant traffic makes it impossible to stop on the road but yesterday I pulled into the long driveway and took a photo from the opposite side. I’m always reluctant to sit in my car to draw on private property (unless I see someone wandering about who I can ask) so I took a photo and painted this in studio. I think that was the right way to go. It would have been challenging to load up a big drippy brush and paint the background and shadow washes while sitting in the car.

As for my recipe for snow shadows for this one: a little tap of the brush into all my blues (Prussian, Ultramarine, Cobalt and Cerulean) and another tap into the Alizarin Crimson. Painted on a pad of Arches CP paper, 10″ x 14″.

This is a wonderful painting. Yes, a good decision to paint it in studio! And thank you for the snow recipe. It’s always fun to see what colors people use since it is rarely white!

  2. Betsy says:

Gorgeous! Feel like I am there in the cold. Can almost touch the texture of the old painted wood.

Brrr! I always love the red of barns and such against the harsh brightness of snow in sun and shadow.

Probably I said it before and I am not going to stop saying, you are the best when it comes painting snow. Simple and beautiful!

So lovely! Your sketches are like a breath of fresh air – a revitalizing pause from life’s busy-ness and concerns to appreciate my surroundings from a creative vantage point. Even Winter becomes beautiful rather than just a season of shoveling chores. Thank you for all your inspiring work!

The barn looks like a warm refuge among the coooold snow. Beautiful painting! You’ve told a great story! I love it!

Beautiful! I look forward to seeing it in other seasons too.

  12. Laurie says:

I love your painting especially the snow paintings. I live in a rural area of Western New York with lots of lovely snow scenes that I would like to paint, but it is always tough to find a place to park!

  13. Karen Kiddey says:

Brilliant! You have really captured the winter light…the cold blue poking through the slate coloured trees.
