An emerald in the woods
Posted: March 10, 2025 Filed under: Uncategorized 24 CommentsI’m rushing to get in the last few snow paintings before the white stuff is gone. This green house is on a road not too far from here. No doubt, I would probably not even notice it in summer but on a sunny day in winter — covered in fresh snow and backed by a forest — it was a little jewel in the woods.
I am experimenting with Holbein watercolours this week, but my shadow mix for snow is the same as always — a bit of Cerulean, a bit of Cobalt and a tiny dot of Violet. As for the green, it’s mostly Cobalt Green mixed with a bit of yellow. Painted on a 1/4 sheet of Arches CP paper.

In other news: I am truly honoured that my painting “Southside Harbour” was selected for the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour 100th Anniversary Exhibition. The show will be on at the prestigious Roberts Gallery in Toronto from March 15-29th. It’s a wonderful show and if you are in the Toronto area, the opening is March 15th from 1 pm to 4 pm. Have a look at all the paintings here.

Beautiful
Thanks so much Sadje!
You’re welcome
That green is gorgeous.
Lois, thank you so much!
Hi! I’m wondering if you’ve tried the Beam paint yet. I just order a small sample sheet and I really like them.
Paula
Hi Paula, I have not tried Beam paint yet but I am all in favour of buying Canadian. I guess you tired a dot card, right? Will you purchase some of the pans?
That is a fabulous harbour painting, so a well deserved recognition. Living on Vancouver Island, there are a good number of harbours and marinas for me to visit. The French Creek marina, three minutes from my house is particularly wonderful. It’s on my ‘to do’ list. I have your book on painting sailboats in Pte Claire so I’ll have to review it in preparation.
Peter, thanks for having a look. This one was from a harbour in Newfoundland. I love all harbours and I bet French Creek is wonderful too. I especially love working boats which is why I also love to paint the lobster boats in Maine.
Lovely winter woods scene. Thanks for that tip about the colors you use in your snow shadows.
Congratulations on “Southside Harbour” acceptance in the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour 100th Anniversary Exhibition!! Brava!
Joanna, thank you! It really was an honour to be in this show.
Absolutely lovely.
Congrats on yet another recognition. We all aspire to follow in your footsteps.
Beautiful paintings 😊
Good Morning dear friend Shari,
Congratulations for getting your painting “Southside Harbor” selected for the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Color 100th Anniversary Exhibition.
All the best and good luck.
Blessings
Uma
Wow! It is beautiful, Shari – well done and congratulations!
Your harbor painting is so beautiful…one of your very best!
The paintings are both lovely. The colorful boats and shapes and reflections are beautiful. Congratulations 🎊
What an honor to have another painting in a big show. And your winter scene has those lovely shadows. It is ironic that when I first saw it, it made me think of your boat scenes with many masts. As I scrolled down, there it was.
Thanks for sharing your pigment choices. Both paintings are wonderful. I particularly like the twisty reflections of the boat masts.
Your gorgeous blurry reflections and atmosphere are the perfect foil for the crisp lines of all those boats. It’s a magical painting. Congratulations on being accepted in the Exhibition!
Shari, I love the simplicity of the little green house that you add so much too with the surrounding foliage and snow shadows. Beautiful! Congrats on having your painting of the harbour selected for the show. Excellent work on this!
I always love your snow shadows! And the boats are so crisp!
Thanks so much Lynn!
Love your snow scenes, Shari. I wish we got more snow where I live!
The blue violet cast shadows, so light and transparent, are especially lovely
