Ten tulips
Posted: May 6, 2026 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: flowers, tulips, watercolour 14 CommentsMy reward for suffering through some miserable dental work was flowers. Through the freezing and the drilling and the general discomfort of the whole thing, all I could think about was flowers. The ones I was going to buy for myself at the florist shop downstairs from the dentist’s office. I was really hoping for daffodils but I guess the season is over, at least at that shop. I must have missed it when I was in Vietnam, so I bought some yellow tulips instead.
The florist had just received the flowers from her supplier when I arrived in the shop, mouth half-frozen. I mumbled my request to her and made my way home to paint them. In a day or two the flowers will open and the leaves will unfold, but in that moment there was something beautiful about the compact form of the ten tulips wrapped tightly wrapped together, waiting for me to draw them.

Painting through the pain–you are a pro, Shari. The tulips are gorgeous. I hope you are smiling soon. 😁
I’m smiling now, Lois. The tooth is all fixed and I got some painting in. That cures everything.
I feelyour pain at the dentist. I coud tolerate breaking my arm in two places ratherthan have my teeth filled. When i was a kid they didnt numb the teeth when filling. Remember the movie The Marathon Man and how drilling teeth without Novocaine was done as torture?
Your picture is perfect!

Grace, I can’t even imagine that! The part that I dread the most is the freezing. When they put that needle in, so awful! But I can’t even imagine having any of this without freezing.
grace, i have had the exact same experience as a child, seeing that movie, and having horrible dentals fears now! shari, i so get this and at least you have the beautiful flowers –
Beautiful!! Tulips make everything feel better!
Good Morning Dear friend Shari,
Your paintings are always amazing, as usual.
These Tulips are beautifully painted.
All the best and good luck.
Wishing you beautiful day always.
Blessings to you.
Uma🙏
Always good to have a treat to look forward to whilst you’re in the dentist’s chair … and even better if it turns out as well as your’s did!
Thank you so much Tony!
Hi Shari, glad you survived that dental procedure! Then to return home to paint these lovely flowers-beautiful!
Thanks Denise. Yes, I survived the dentist’s chair. I’m so relieved that it’s over!!
I love the way you painted those simple but dramatic leaves! Years ago my daughter taught me that ice cream is always needed after any female medical procedure, so now I’ll add flowers after dental work to my list 🙂
Ice cream would have done the trick too but with a frozen mouth, that was not possible. I like the way your daughter thinks!
I’m glad you had something interesting to think about while you were in the chair. You had time to work out a lovely arrangement! Flowers make most things better…chocolate too. lol
