Facing south
Posted: January 20, 2013 Filed under: Uncategorized 10 Comments »I liked the view from the Hilton Hotel so much when I was sketching yesterday that I did one facing north (the cathedral) and a second one facing south. I seem to always be looking up at things when I draw (seated in my car) so it was a good change to look down at the rooftops.

What an amazing beautifully balanced composition of geometric patterns of rhythmic lines
and shapes. It’s like a military marching parade of shapes and lines all in harmony.
Lovely subtle tones of soft colour accented with white and black too. Love it Shari
Thanks Mary. I love the military marching parade analogy!!
Wow this is great! I would never come up to the color solution for that blind gray abyss in the window!
I know you were a bit puzzled about what to choose from this scene Julia. I just picked a section and worked out from there. I really liked those three gray cylinders on the roof in the foreground so I started there. It was a huge gray panorama but the softness made it easier to tackle too.
Buildings and architecture are a real challenge for me to sketch; very nice sketch in this post – gives me a little inspiration to get myself into sketching the buildings of Washington, DC. Those green windows are a great stand out, BTW!
Thanks Jason. This viewoint was a real challenge for me too but it was really good practice. Well architecture may be a challenge for you but the bike you did was great!

thanks!
Jen
Nice to hear from you! I will add you to the list Jen. I will be organizing my summer workshops in the next few weeks.
I once drew a sketch out of my hotel window. All I had was a ballpoint pen and notebook paper. It was fun nonetheless.
I love the views out of hotel rooms! Especially in New York City!
