Trouble with palms

Sky, beach, water, high-rise hotels and a row of palm trees. That was the view I had from my beach chair. But when I started to paint this I realized that it had been a good long time since I had really studied a palm tree. They are nothing like the bare branched maples or the evergreens I had been painting in Montreal. The fronds all originate in one place and then flop and swirl and twist all over the place. I wasn’t too happy with the way they came out here…

… and so that lead to this little study of the palms closest to my chair. The thing about palms is that there are so many colours in the fronds. There are the near-dead ones that are ochre, the ones facing the sun that are bright yellowish-green and then there are those devils hiding in the shade — the ones that demand the darkest blue greens in my palette.

I agree that palms can be devilish, but they are worth it. I was born in Miami and I truly miss the palms, especially now that it’s Winter!

Oh Darn! That is the trouble with sketching when one is on a BEACH! -13degreesC here-pretty much white, gray, black, dingy gray, and many shades of brown…I think you get the idea.
    Happy New Year! 🙂

This is a classic demonstration of drawing being about ‘seeing’. Good for you to dig in and study those palms !
