At dusk
Posted: May 1, 2012 Filed under: Uncategorized 10 CommentsIt was very serene near Lac St. Louis tonight, with only the sounds of the red wing blackbirds and the occasional kayaker going by. I don’t usually sketch in the evening but these days work has been keeping me busy. I much prefer the morning light (and having the time to fix my sketch if need be!). But when I got home and took a look at my sketch in the light I realized what a muddy mess it was! The reason? The darker it got outside the more paint I added to my paper. I think tomorrow I’ll go back to sketching in the morning.

I think it expresses the quality of dusk and does not look muddy to me!
Thanks Linda. I think I overworked the lower part of the church, with too much paint behind that tree…
I wish that I could paint a “muddy mess” like this!!!
Before I read your words, I thought that this was stunning and captured the twilight gloom really well. So, I think you should try a few more of these rather than going back to what you are obviously too comfortable with… perhaps you need to invest in one of those little head lamps?
That’s pretty funny. I think I may have to take a little trip to the hardware store and get one of those things. If painting doesn’t work out for me I could always become a miner.
Yes, get the head lamp, because my next suggestion was that you should try a night scene… you need the challenge! So, do you do requests?
A request for a night scene? I have been thinking about that myself so I may just try it. After I get the head lamp.
Great work! Always a pleasure to see your progression… I love everything about this piece. The colours, the subject the light, the added dark lines where it was important to have them. Great to see you adapt to your time of day and lighting. You have a way of capturing the moment and beauty of it. Job well done.
Thank you so much for the comments Dianna. I always find it interesting to see how my perception of something can be so different from other people looking at my sketches.
Hi Shari — I love your muddy mess 😉 It has a gothic feeling to it that is very very interesting because of the light.
Guess what Jane? Same building you always like!!
